mGen, Inc. is a privately held company
founded in 1995. Initially, mGen focused on consulting
with large corporations and government agencies to help
facilitate the delivery of interactive media for training
and communications initiatives. By the end of its first
year in business, mGen had developed a client base that
included Pitney Bowes, Sanders and Lockheed Martin.
In the summer of 1996, mGen was awarded
a contract by the United States Army to design a specification
for a delivery system, which would be capable of dispersing
interactive training to U.S. Army resident trainees
at seventeen schoolhouse locations. The contract also
required mGen to provide an evaluation and recommendation
of a technical architecture that would scale to thousands
of users while delivering full motion video to student
desktops within the training LAN. In addition, video
needed to be integrated into other interactive elements
such as animation, audio, text, graphics and testing
capabilities.
In the fall of 1997, mGen delivered
version 1.0 of mGen Enterprise to the U.S. Army. The
technical architecture included a database that tracked
all aspects of the system, including media elements,
user status, testing results and streaming technologies.
The system was implemented at the prototype facility
located at Fort Eustis, Virginia and was approved by
the U.S. Army as fulfilling all of the stated objectives.
mGen's relationship and contact with the US Army, now
known as the Classroom XXI program, still exists today.
mGen's success with the Classroom XXI
program led to the development of strategic relationships
with companies such as Oracle and nCUBE. mGen was also
contacted by a number of technology companies, including
Real Networks, Silicon Graphics, Optivision, Minerva,
Optibase, FORE Systems and Cabletron to integrate their
broadband media capabilities into the mGen Enterprise
interactive environment.
In the fall of 1998, sales of mGen Enterprise
began to outweigh requests for consulting services,
therefore, the Company began to focus exclusively on
the sale and development of its software. In March 2001,
EDS awarded mGen, Inc. a three-year contract to provide
distance learning and training to 800,000 Navy and Marine
Corps personnel, as part of a $6.9 billion Navy Marine
Corps Intranet (NMCI) contract, the largest federal
information technology contract in history. Today, mGen
has numerous customers in the federal, educational and
enterprise markets
The employee base at mGen, Inc. consists
primarily of software, hardware and systems engineers,
who have specific knowledge in cell and packet based
networking, database, microwave and satellite transmission,
software design and client server architecture. mGen's
philosophy is to maintain a strong focus on the engineering
of our core product line and the skills needed for its
deployment; therefore, the Company develops strong partnerships
to address additional areas of focus such as sales,
consulting and content. This approach allows mGen to
maintain its focus on customers in order to address
their individual needs.
